For reminds, the literary original tells about the apocalypse that was caused by the release of a deadly biological weapon from a military base. The few who survived begin to have visions that show them the way and herald the appearance of the Messenger of Good and Evil. Divided mankind forms two camps, in Boulder, Colorado, led by Mother Abigail, and in Las Vegas, led by the demonic Rick Flagg.

The limited season of The Stand will consist of 9 episodes that will appear on the CBS All Access streaming platform at weekly intervals. It is worth mentioning that this is not the first television adaptation of this King’s book. Already in 1994, a 4-episode series of the same title was made, starring Gary Sinise, Molly Ringwald, Jamey Sheridan and Laura San Giacomo.

The latest series stars Whoopi Goldberg (as Abagail’s Mother) and Alexander Skarsgård (Randall Flagg). Also in the cast: James Marsden (Stu Redman), Odessa Young (Frannie Goldsmith), Jovan Adepo (Larry Underwood), Amber Heard (Nadine Cross), Owen Teague (Harold Lauder), Henry Zaga (Nick Andros), Brad William Henke (Tom Cullen), Irene Bedard (Ray Bretner), Eion Bailey (Weizak), Heather Graham (Rita Blakemoor), Katherine McNamara (Julie Lawry), Natalie Martinez (Dayna Jurgens), Hamish Linklater (Dr. Jim Ellis), Daniel Sunjata (Cobb) and Greg Kinnear (Glen Bateman).

The action of “The Stand” takes place in the world after the apocalypse. State-of-the-art biological weapons bring complete destruction. No explosions, no terrorist attacks, no announcements – humanity is dying. It starts innocently with the common cold. Someone sneezed, someone died and suddenly the Earth became a mass grave. The few who survived begin to dream. Visions show them the way, announce the appearance of the Messenger of Good and Evil. Everyone has to make a choice, and when that happens – follow the chosen path. Divided humanity forms two camps and sets out to build or destroy a new reality. The miniseries stars Whoopi Goldberg as Mother Abigail, Alexander Skarsgard as Randall Flagg, Odessa Young as Frannie Goldsmith, Jovan Adepo as Larry Underwood, Owen Teague as Harold Lauder, Heather Graham as Rita Blakemoor, Nat Wolff as Lloyd Henreid, James Marsden as Stu Redman , Amber Heard as Nadine Cross, Greg Kinnear as Glen Bateman, and Heather Graham as Rita Blakemoor.

Like most of King’s works, “The Stand” has already got its television adaptation. It was realized by the ABC station in 1994. The production consisted of four episodes, starring, among others, Gary Sinise, Molly Ringwald, Rob Lowe and Laura San Giacomo. However, it is worth noting that a quarter of a century has passed since then. So it’s high time for the novel, considered by some fans to be the diamond in the crown of King’s prose, to have a new interpretation.

The Stand is, after the mini-series of the same name from 1994, another adaptation of Stephen King’s post-apocalyptic thriller – this time as a nine-part series on CBS All Access.

Complete storyline and information about The Stand

After the so-called Project Blue, a biological warfare project – also known by the nickname Captain Trips – went fatally wrong on a remote military base, the released virus wiped out almost all of humanity in a pandemic of unimaginable proportions. Those who did not get killed by the flu immediately were killed by the chaos and the violent battles over the remaining resources.

The few survivors essentially band together in two camps: Those who love peace gather around 108-year-old Abagail Freemantle, who knows how to convince with her vision of a democratic free zone. On the other side of morality is the charismatic and diabolical Randall Flagg, a smiling monster endowed with magical powers.

In keeping with his ethos, he has settled in Las Vegas, from where he exercises his fatal power. When Flagg learns about the Free Zone and recognizes its destructive potential (in a positive sense) for his worldview, there is only one logical conclusion: The free zone must be erased from the earth. The last stand is imminent …

Background & information about The Stand

After a first edition of 800 pages published in 1978, bestselling author Stephen King followed up with a final version of The Stand expanded to over 300 pages in 1990. After the successful film adaptations of Carrie – Des Satan’s Youngest Daughter (Director: Brian De Palma) and Shining (Director: Stanley Kubrick), The Stand should also be brought to the big screen. However, this should be an implementation appropriate to the wealth of narrative material.

The script adaptation by Rospo Pallenberg got King’s blessing, George A. Romero would then direct. But the executive studio Warner Brothers withdrew from the planned production. The years passed by. Even though the first implementation of the TV miniseries The Stand took place, the plans for a theatrical version had never been discarded, but only put on hold.

As is so often the case when a project burns for years in development hell, a multitude of names circulated in the ether of speculation. Since 2011 names like David Yates (Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince), Ben Affleck (Argo) or Scott Cooper (Crazy Heart) had been traded for the director, until Josh Boone (Destiny is a lousy traitor) found a promising candidate was. There were other rumors about the cast of the pro and antagonists: Matthew McConaughey and Christian Bale were supposed to face each other in the final battle.

In January 2019, the planned film adaptation became a series. Season 1 will consist of 9 episodes and will premiere on the US streaming service CBS All Access on December 17, 2020. Josh Boone continues to be involved as a writer and director.
